Stored Diesel Testing

Fuel, the entire lifeblood of an emergency power system, is often overlooked in system tests and audits.

But with the increased demand placed on critical facilities it has become imperative for organizations to test their emergency fuel reserves. The majority of organizations have experienced a significant increase in the cost of diesel fuel, making it costly to replace contaminated supplies.

Global warming has necessitated more stringent environmental regulations, which makes incinerating contaminated fuel a costly and undesirable solution.

The introduction and mandatory use of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel in January 2010 exacerbates issues concerning storing and maintaining quality fuel. The underdeveloped infrastructure of the Power and Utility sectors has decreased their ability to keep pace with power demands. Power shortages are a serious concern, especially at mission critical sites.

The National Building Code, Fire Code of Canada, and the National Electrical Code contain stipulations to ensure annual testing and compliance of fuel reserves used to power emergency generators. Performing fuel tests is the only way to verify the quality of stored fuel.

Annual independent testing will confirm if your stored diesel is contaminated with freestanding and emulsified water, sediment, or microbial growths or that it is clear, bright and code compliant.

If the diesel fuel is compliant, you can be assured it will not impede engine start-up or the operation of your emergency power system. If your diesel has lost it's integrity your ability to reliabily generate power during and emergency situation is compromised, which compromises your entire disaster mitigation plan(s).
